How to Needlepoint

Welcome to the best hobby! Needlepoint is an extremely relaxing hobby, and it's very easy to get started.

Supply List

Here's what you'll need:

  • Needle
  • Painted Needlepoint Canvas
  • Thread
  • Needle Threader
  • Embroidery Scissors

Nice to have, but not mandatory:

  • Stretcher bars
  • Tacks to put canvas on stretcher bars
  • Project bag to keep your canvas and threads together

Once you have your project and your threads, you're ready to start stitching!

How to start your thread

In order to start your thread, you'll pull about a forearm's length of thread and snip it with your embroidery scissors. If you're using a strandable thread, you can use the loop start, which is a really clean way to begin.

Now that you're thread is on your canvas, you're ready to keep stitching!

Needlepoint Stitches

Continental Stitch

Continental Stitch is the foundational stitch in needlepoint. It's worked from right to left to start, then switches direction when you get to the end of the paitned area.

Binding Stitch

The binding stitch is great for finishing the edges of bookmarks or key fobs.

This page will be a living document and I'll be adding more stitches in the coming weeks. Happy stitching! Please reach out on social media if you have any questions.
